The ruler of Dubai, and also the vice-president and prime minister of United Arab Emirates (UAE), Shaikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, died aged 62 while visiting Australia, the UAE's president's office said. A statement issued by the UAE ministry of presidential affairs said, "The UAE today lost a historical leader who has contributed throughout his life in establishing the UAE and enhancing its structure and the welfare of its people. The government has announced a 40-day official mourning during which flags will fly at half-mast. Ministries, government institutions and departments will remain closed for seven days starting from today. The late Shaikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum was laid to rest at Umm Hurair Cemetery at Bur Dubai on Thursday, 05 January after his funeral prayer at Zabeel Mosque. General Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashed Al Maktoum, the defence minister of the United Arab Emirates, took over as ruler of Dubai following the death of Shaikh Maktoum bin Rashed Al Maktoum today, officials said. The handover to Dubai's crown prince, Shaikh Mohammed, was automatic, officials said. Shaikh Mohammed has been the UAE defence minister since 1971 and heir apparent to the throne of Dubai since 1995. With his brother, Shaikh Maktoum's blessing, he has been largely responsible for the phenomenal growth and development of the city in recent years. The Crown Prince General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum has been the driving force behind Dubai's rapid growth. He is a man well known across the world for his vision and ambition, as well as his passion for racing and the ownership of the global racing brand Godolphin. |
